The Shatter Me series, titled after the first book, is a young adult (YA) series first published in 2011, that became insanely popular on TikTok in 2020 during the pandemic. The story follows Juliette Ferrars, a girl with a lethal touch in this dystopian, romantic thriller. She navigates love, loneliness, friendship, and an oppressive, totalitarian government called The Reestablishment.
This series is quite literally everything to me, and got me back into reading after I’d stopped for a few years. I remember reading it in 2021 and being absolutely obsessed—I could not put it down, and I’d beg my mom to take me to get the next book each time I finished one. Her story had me hooked, the immersive and alluring way in which Mafi details Juliette’s inner thoughts and emotions, and of course, the one and only, Aaron Warner, had me mesmerized. Plus, the covers are absolutely stunning.
If you’ve engaged with BookTok at any point, then you’ve most likely heard of the infamous Aaron Warner. Fans of this series ride or die for Warner and his relentless and undying love for Juliette, but for those who have not read the series (which you should) Warner is not the love interest in the first book… or really even the second. This series is the perfect example of SLOW BURN. And Mafi is a master of patience and yearning.
Originally this series was concluded after just three books, however Mafi felt these characters’ stories were only just beginning, and thank goodness she kept going! She went on to write three more books in the series, including five novellas that each independently take place in between each main series book, and they feature different character perspectives and deeper insight into the series. I am begging you, don’t skip the novellas! They are crucial.
Mafi also announced a Shatter Me spinoff series in 2024, with the first title, Watch Me, published in April of 2025, featuring both new and old characters set ten years after the events of Imagine Me (the final book) for readers to dive back into and enjoy. Ecstatic doesn’t even come close to how I felt when she made this announcement (especially since I never finished Believe Me because I couldn’t bear the thought of the series being over.)
Now, don’t get me wrong, I am so extremely excited for this adaptation, I will be sat in the theaters as soon as the trailer comes out. They’ll be asking me to leave but I won’t. However I am equally as nervous. Why? Casting.
For years, fans have crafted their own casting lists and preferences for this series, and no one can seem to agree on who should play both Juliette and Warner. Some would even go as far as to say they never want to see this series adapted to film, for fear of ruining the magic, which I completely understand.
I do have hope though, as Mafi will be joining production as an executive producer, and she stated that she knows how important this series is to everyone and how dire the casting situation is, saying to the Warner Bros. team, “you have to get the cast right.”
And they must!!!!
Fans and Mafi are hoping for new, fresh faces for these characters, which I believe will work in favor of this series and hopefully ease fans into trusting that everything will work out.
Warner’s devilishly good looks and his drawn out and unwavering yearning (I’m talking years-worth) for Juliette are what made readers fall in love with him. Juliette’s complexity and strength are what made readers admire her. This series means more to fans and myself than just obsessing over Warner, it represents the power of women, friendship, and love, even when all odds are stacked against you. Fans of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Maze Runner will find both comfort and absolute joy in this series.
Happy reading, and don’t forget to read the novellas!
